If you are having trouble choosing between a male or female Petite Pup, here are a few observations that may help you decide. Remember, these are the average findings and there are always exceptions to the rule. Not all females behave the same, nor do all males.
Most dogs are easily motivated by food and praise, and so eager to please that training is easy. However, males can be more easily distracted during training, as males like to play so often. No matter his age, he is more likely to act silly and more puppy-like, always wanting to play games. Boys become very dependent and loyal to their person and always want to be with them. Boys are more outgoing and accepting with other pets.

Boys are fun-loving. Females tend to be more reserved as they age. Boy = active, goofy, clumsy, high maintenence until adulthood or longer. Girl = lapdog, calmer, dignified, generally low-maintenence after puppy-hood. Neutered males rarely exhibit secondary sexual behavior such as 'humping', or 'marking' and lifting of legs IF they are neutered early (by 7 months of age) and have not been exposed to a female in heat. Then there are those 'exceptions to the rule' who will hump anything bigger than a breadbox! Females are more dominant and display alpha characteristics towards other pets and can 'hump' all pets. They have periods of being 'in heat' a 2-3 times per year and will bleed unless they are spayed. Females are more independent and territorial, including being possessive of their person. Then there are those 'exceptions to the rule' who act puppy-like and playful forever and are submissive even to the family cat! While the female will usually come to you for attention, when she's had enough, she will move away. Boys are always waiting for your attention and near at hand. Females are sometimes less aggressive than males. Males are more dependent on their people and loyal. The female is less likely to wage a dominance battle with you, but will with other pets. Her pack leader mentality also makes her easier to train, which is an important aspect of the human-dog bond. My favorite way to describe them is this: girl dogs will love you, boy dogs will be in love with you.
There are exceptions to all these generalizations. Shammy acts like a big puppy ALL the time and keeps the other dogs busy and playing. She insists that we play with her several times a day. She is not dominant at all, and just wants to play play play. Her feelings get hurt when the other dogs don't play and want to dominate her, or we don't play her tug-of-war or fetch games when she wants. Shammy wants us to show her that we are in love with her! She thoroughly enjoys being told that she is beautiful. Cassie is the more reserved lap-dog, princess type. She humps Shammy and Dogzilla if they try to get my attentions! She is very possessive of me, but never physically fights with the other dogs. Cassie is happy to be near me, napping all day long. Dogzilla is lost when DeArmond is not around. He follows me around like a little puppy, wanting to be held and petted. But when he is with his boy, he is happy and ready to play! Dogzilla is right next to his boy constantly, but you can't touch either of them when they are sleeping or he will growl menacingly. Hee hee hee, not scared....Doug is a peppy little guy who likes to play all day! He is not aggressive with the other dogs (he knows his place) but does bark when strangers are near. He is possessive of the bed (my bed) and tries to keep the other dogs from coming in the room, but if they enter, he greets them happily. Bottom line, choose the sex that you prefer for whatever reason, and have them spayed/neutered before puberty hits to avoid many behavioral problems. See my coupon page for surprise bonus. Good luck in choosing. :)
